About Me

Renowned physician, musician, author and song writer, Phil Schulman, M.D. is what one may consider a “Renaissance Man”. Born to non-English speaking, immigrant Holocaust survivors, he was raised in the South Bronx. He eschewed these humble beginnings to rise to an illustrious career in academic medicine. A high honors student throughout his early education, he attended City College of New York, where he garnered Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Lade status. Following medical school at Upstate Medical Center-SUNY in Syracuse, New York, he completed his fellowship in hematology and oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He was recruited to North Shore University Hospital, a Weill Cornell Medical College affiliate, where he oversaw the development of the pre-eminent Leukemia Center on Long Island as Chief of Leukemia and Associative Chief of Hematology and Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill-Cornell School of Medicine. He also became the Vice -Chair of the Leukemia Committee of the Cancer Leukemia Group B, the national research arm of the National Cancer Institute for clinical trials in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.

Following a 20 year career as the pre-eminent leukemia specialist on Long Island, he returned to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer to lead their nascent satellite on Long Island. Under Phil Schulman’s leadership, the Long Island Center became the most sought after cancer care delivery system with a doubling of growth in less than 10 years. During this distinguished career, he has co-authored 200 papers, book chapters and abstracts and has received many awards.

Upon his semi- retirement he has continued to see patients as the  Director of Hematologic Malignancies at New York Cancer and Blood Specialists at Mount Sinai and as Professor of Clinical Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In his retirement, he has been afforded him the opportunity to pursue his other interests. He has written songs about love, loss following tragedy such as war or 9-11 and the struggles of the cancer patient. He has authored 2 novels “Deadly Motivations” and the most recent published “Confession”. He continues in these endeavors while he enjoys time with his wife, Sherry, his children Aaron, Daniel and Jamie and his daughter-in law Helene and most assuredly his granddaughter Fiona Rose.
